Leipzig looks back on a proud literary tradition. We trace the footsteps of numerous poets and writers who at one time or another lived in Leipzig, a view of both past and present notables. The first to be recorded in the 13th century if not the first to come was, the minstrel Heinrich von Morungen who lived in the Thomas Convent; and both princes of German poetry, Goethe and Schiller honored the city by doing some of their writing here. Over the last 100 years there have been such well known names as Erich Kästner, Hans Meyer or Erich Loest who moved to this city of books. There is also an annually book fair and “The Literary Autumn” in Leipzig and so the city carries on this great tradition drawing the magnates of literature here again and again for short tenures and meetings with each other.
