„Leipzig im neuen Gewand“ – sanierte und neue Architektur in der historischen Innenstadt

„Leipzig’s new face“– the historic city center through the ages

The topics of this tour are buildings that have been recently constructed renovated and especially the ones in the city center that have undergone elaborate historical refurbishing.
Comparing the buildings now with old pictures you will notice some major changes over the last 20 years.
How did these buildings and places look before World War II and during the communist era?
You will see the rebuilt university complex at the Augustus Square, renovated houses in Grimmaische Straße and the “treasure chest” of our museum of local history. Inside the impressive glass cube of our Museum of Fine Art you can talk about it all over a glass of sparkling wine.
Buildings of the late Renaissance, Baroque and later eras of history have been superbly renovated await you in Hainstraße.
Passing the historical town square we’ll reach St. Thomas Church and go on to the Pleisse River. The tour ends with a preview to the “ Water World of Leipzig” that is emerging from making lakes out of the old mines and extending the canal system.

In terms of architecture, history, culture and art history you’ll get to know the most important sights of our city.

Friedliche Revolution – Herbst ´89 in Leipzig

Autumn ´89 in Leipzig

When in 1982, the leading Christians met for prayers for peace in the St. Nicholas Church. Nobody had an inkling then that those regular meetings would be the beginning of a revolution which had never been experienced before:
The peaceful members of these legendary Monday protests made history in Germany.
Our tour focuses on those events of the Autumn of 1989 and leads from the St. Nicholas Church to Augustus Square and then to the “Runde Ecke” the district administration of the former Ministry of State Security (of the GDR), the hated Stasi.
